It's not a whole chair. In fact it is just a chair leg, but I felt that in order to do justice to the beautifully turned 'barley twist' that the leg deserved it's own closeup :)

EDM #29: Draw Something Architectural

EDM #29: Draw Something Architectural
Originally uploaded by Spinneretta

I was slightly delayed with my artwork after being distracted into drawing ducks one day. The ducks were busy trying to bite my toes, but I got some good studies.
So today I am back at EDM #29- draw something architectural. This is a local restaurant we love, called Cul's Courthouse Grille, in Charles City County, Virginia. They are absolutely DELICIOUS when it comes to the food and the ambience of the historic house and the courthouse just across the road cannot be beaten!!

So I went out to the garden to pick a jalapeno and two sungold tomatoes. They are ripening on my garden plants now- although I think I may have another hornworm!
I had difficulty getting the backlit tomatoes to work well... and this paper doesn't seem to like layers of washes.

drawing glass is always tricky- I chose the approach of blue-greys laid on in layers leaving the reflections clear.
Not a bad effort :)

Originally uploaded by Spinneretta

It probably comes as no surprise that Dad is a big tea drinker- he is English after all. Only if you follow that logic, then the fact that my Mum and I hate the stuff must seem very wrong!!
This was the brand that Dad favoured when he came to visit. The kids liked it too, so we still get it ;)

EDM #17- Draw a Musical Instrument
Originally uploaded by Spinneretta

OK I drew two. And it kind of got away from me, they seemed so simple at first!!

One of them I can play, the other I cannot- and any dreams I had of making a bigger spread went out the window when it took me four times as long as I had planned to do just this spread ;)

Watercolours with a little pigma and gel pen help ;)

EDM #16: Draw a Favourite Tool
Originally uploaded by Spinneretta

I don't have a favourite tool. I have lots!! I wasn't about to draw something as mundane as a tool from a toolbox- those are not MY tools ;) Of my tools, there are my paintbrushes, spinning stuff, sewing stuff, knitting and crocheting stuff...
So what to choose? My choice was the knitting needles- because those caps on the end provided something interesting :)

Originally uploaded by Spinneretta

The pawpaw is of course something I have drawn multiple times before. Its large, almost finger-shaped leaves have always fascinated me, and the delicious fruits are interesting too :)
This is a Common Pawpaw Asimina triloba which we have growing in the garden :)

I had to photograph this to get the right greens (apparently the foliage setting helps LOL) and get both parts of the spread in one :)

I'll eventually get the hang of doing veins- I just haven't come to it in my book yet ;)

EDM #14: Draw what you see in the morning when you get up

EDM #14: Draw what you see in the morning when you get up
Originally uploaded by Spinneretta

I loved the idea one of the other challenge participants did- where she did her sideways view. So I did mine that way too. I cannot see much in the morning, my glasses are very much needed, so this was taken in the afternoon from a photo :)
It is surprisingly difficult to draw sideways without turning your head to correct it ;)

I admit, after drawing it, I did paint it the regular way up ;)

The bow on the left, btw, is from my newest sketchbook, made with instructions from Carol's blog- I love it :)

I made slight changes- using a leather tie as the tie to close it, and I chose to have the flap to the back- I like the plain front page :)

EDM #12: Draw What you ate for dinner
Originally uploaded by Spinneretta

We went to Jason's Deli for dinner, after DH had to stay in work to get rid of a virus outbreak. I love their Ciabatta Garden sandwich, and thanks to the camera I was able to take a quick photo without holding up the family to draw (that causes loud complaints from children you know) and without totally forgetting to draw my dinner before eating it (as I did yesterday- hence the switched around challenges ;))

It's a teeny tiny portrait from a photo (no good mirror for a self portrait using one!). I only took about a hundred photos of myself until I found one I thought looked 'like me' LOL
I kind of like the streaky hair- maybe I'll actually get mine done like this LOL That is supposed to be the shadows and lights!
Yes the glasses are pretty small- but I have drawn them before ;)

A long time ago, DH told the kids the story of a "woolly booger" and animated it with the hand as above- middle finger is the head, the others and thumb as the legs.
The kids loved it and now they often play with the "woolly booger" which can get embarrassing when it climbs their chest or face in public ;)

I have had this rabbit since I was a baby- I have replaced the eyes and ears that fell off, re-sewn the mouth and nose twice, (this is my favourite version so far), and he is quite threadbare- but well loved. I guess that makes him real, doesn't it? :) He is also the only one of my toys that made it to the USA with me ;)

Originally uploaded by Spinneretta

Yes, I am missing EDM #6... because the *only* well loved childhood toy I have over here with me, has been acquired by the kids and hidden in the toys!
So I skipped one and drew this instead :)
This lovely carafe once held wine- we kept the attractive bottle because of the shape ;)

EDM #5: Draw Your Bed

EDM #5: Draw Your Bed
Originally uploaded by Spinneretta

This is my bed- slightly odd perspective because I was sitting on it as I drew it :) The knots on the bedposts are loose and turn- which is why they look funny too ;)

This is an antique Southern America piece- my collector husband tells me it is Loblolly Pine- it is beautiful, very high (around 3'6") and not quite big enough when DD wants to lie in the bed with us ;)
The blanket on the bed is a crocheted one that was given to DH by a friend of his mother. I think she may have been the blind friend, but I am not sure.
Yes. it IS freshly made. No, I did not intend to draw it that way- DH stripped the bed before I could draw it unmade ;)

Also quite challenging attempting to do more than one layer on this paper ;)

Here we go with number 1... in my new Inktense pencils. I did not quite have the right colour for my shoes, but you get the idea- they usually get lots of compliments ;)
