Yarn Along: Wednesday 19th October

Ginny Says:
~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Take a photo and share it either on your blog or on Flickr. ~

Yes,I am back for the yarn along this week.  I have been busy trying to homeschool the reluctant children- which allows knitting time because this pattern needs very little attention!  I finished the back of my Quick Knit 1940's Sweater.  It really is a very quick knit- I can't say as how I have spent lots of time of this sweater.  The stitch is a twist stitch- which you might consider a narrow cable stitch, but the authors of the pattern have told you how to do it all without a cable needle!
I am a little leery of how narrow it looks- but my gauge swatch (yes I did one for this- most unusual) knitted up the the right size with these smaller needles.  I am supposing it looks narrow and long because it stretches widthwise.  I think I shall make a sleeve next, before repeating this to make the front.
My book is one I picked up at the library because I thought it looked interesting- and might be a good geography book.  It is called Paris to the Past: Traveling through French History by Train by Ina Caro.  So far, I am enjoying the book quite a bit.

  1. How neat to be able to create a stitch that looks like a cable without the cable needles! I've been wanting to try it but just haven't been brave enough yet :)

  3. Your sweater looks great so far. I find that things always looks small to me, but tend to work out ok in the end.

  4. That looks like a really lovely stitch, I love patterns from the 40's, very classic!

  5. The sweater will look very nice once it's complete - it looks like a very fitted pattern (the kinds I usually stay away from). And the book is intriguing. I find that as I get older, I really love reading about history. My oldest loves history. Wouldn't this be neat to read and then to actually take the train ride?

  6. Rosina- this is really easy. The cable is a three stitch cable over 4 rows. Row one, you knit two together and then go back and knit into the first of the two together stitches before dropping it off of the needle, then knit one. Rows 2 and 4 are purl. Row three you knit 1, knit two together, knit again into the first of the two together stitches before dropping off the needle. It is far harder to type the instructions than to do it!
    Linda- thank you :)
Andria- thanks :) I often have the same issue!
Devonmama- me too :) I have actually got a completed top I made from a 1930's pattern- I have just been waiting for the right time to wear it (and for me to make some high waisted trousers to wear it with LOL)
Ellen- it is very fitted. The cable rib is VERY stretchy, and I think the idea is to mimic that 1940's silhouette without a lot of shaping. And yes, it would be really cool to read the book before embarking on the journey! I wonder if there is one for London too- I might be able to do that LOL

  8. That is so pretty! I have to say that I am having a love affair with 1940's styles at the moment. I found a lovely book in my local library filled with wartime knits. Once all my Christmas knitting is out of the way perhaps I shall indulge in a little yesteryear knitting.
